| Upstarts
from Cagayan de Oro barge into world 10ball R32
October 2, 2008
MANILA, Philippines
– A pair of unfamiliar Filipino pool players advanced
into the round of 32 in the World Pool Association World
10-Ball Championships Thursday at the Philippine International
Convention Center.
Demosthenes Pulpul narrowly defeated
world women’s champion Jasmin Ouschan of Austria
9-8, and Leonardo Didal came away with a 9-5 win against
Zhang Shu-Chun of China in the afternoon session to
become the first local players to bounce their Round
One opponents.
Pulpul was ready to pack his cue sticks
after Ouschan set herself up for a run-out on the hill.
But the lady cue artist muffed what could have been
the game-winner on the no.5. Pulpul took advantage of
the miscue to live another round.
“I haven’t been able to
sleep because this whole [10-ball] experience has been
tremendous,” Pulpul, who hails from Cagayan de
Oro like Didal, said. “This is my first time to
play on national television and I’m just enjoying
it.”
In the final 32, Pulpul takes on Kazuo
Furuta of Japan and Didal plays Yang Ching-Shung of
Chinese-Taipei.
Among the foreigners, double world champion
Ralf Souquet of Germany and world 9-ball champion Daryl
Peach of England also booked seat in the last 32.
Souquet bucked a bum stomach to beat
Imran Majid of Great Britain 9-5, while the flu-stricken
Peach routed local player Arnel Bautista 9-4.
“I made some big shots out there
and I played more cautious, especially now that I’m
against a Filipino player who is also known as a giant
killer,” Peach said.
Other prominent foreign players who
advanced were Mike Immonen of Finland, Shane van Boening
of the US and Satoshi Kawabata of Japan.
Bautista became the seventh Filipino
to be shown the exit.
He joined Edgar Acaba, Florencio Banar,
Elvis Calasang, Antonio Gabica, Elmer Kalaquian, and
Mario Tolentino who were all ousted in the group stages.
Acaba and Kalaquian were ousted Wednesday
when they lost in the one-chance losers’ bracket
Acaba fell 9-6 Christian Weigoni of
Germany, while Kalaquian lost 9-6 to Ming Wang of China.
Banar, Calasang,
Gabica and Tolentino left the tournament winless in
two games. – GMANews.TV
