MANILA, Philippines – Marlon Manalo defeated Tee Chee Soon of Brunei 9-6 to lead four Filipinos into the next round of the World Pool Association-backed World 10-ball Championship Monday at the Philippine International Convenction Center in Pasay City.

Other Filipinos who won their opening matches were Victor Arpilleda (over Wang Kuo-Pin of Chinese-Taipei 9-6), Elmer Kalaquian (over Matjaz Elcujz of Slovenia 9-3), and Demosthenes Pulpul (Muhd al-Bin All of Qatar 9-2).

Three other local bets were not as fortunate. Jericho Banares lost to Steve Moore of the US 9-4, Florencio Banar to Bruno Maratore 9-5 and Elvis Calasang to Naoyuki Oi 9-8.

All three will be relegated to the losers’ bracket.

“Hindi rin madali yung panalo ko. Nag-tie pa nga kami at 4-all pero naka-tatlong sunod ako," Manalo said.

In the foreign side, Daryl Peach of Great Britain defeated Sit Chung Ching of Hong Kong 9-4 in his first outing.

Doha Asian Games 9-ball champion Liu Shin Me, one of the few lady participants entered in the predominantly male field, stamped her class over Christian Tuvi of Uruguay, 9-4.

Thorsten Hohmann of Germany also won his first match, a 9-5 decision over Albin Ouschan of Austria. – GMANews.TV
