leads RP winners in World 10-ball opener

MANILA, Philippines – Marlon Manalo defeated
Tee Chee Soon of Brunei 9-6 to lead four Filipinos into
the next round of the World Pool Association-backed
World 10-ball Championship Monday at the Philippine
International Convenction Center in Pasay City.
Other Filipinos who won their opening matches were
Victor Arpilleda (over Wang Kuo-Pin of Chinese-Taipei
9-6), Elmer Kalaquian (over Matjaz Elcujz of Slovenia
9-3), and Demosthenes Pulpul (Muhd al-Bin All of Qatar
9-2).
Three other local bets were not as fortunate. Jericho
Banares lost to Steve Moore of the US 9-4, Florencio
Banar to Bruno Maratore 9-5 and Elvis Calasang to Naoyuki
Oi 9-8.
All three will be relegated to the losers’ bracket.
“Hindi rin madali yung panalo ko. Nag-tie pa
nga kami at 4-all pero naka-tatlong sunod ako,"
Manalo said.
In the foreign side, Daryl Peach of Great Britain defeated
Sit Chung Ching of Hong Kong 9-4 in his first outing.
Doha Asian Games 9-ball champion Liu Shin Me, one of
the few lady participants entered in the predominantly
male field, stamped her class over Christian Tuvi of
Uruguay, 9-4.
Thorsten Hohmann of Germany also won his first match,
a 9-5 decision over Albin Ouschan of Austria. –
