SUPER TYPHOONS

Typhoons Iliang, Loleng, Harurot, Yoyong, Paeng, Queenie and Reming are considered by PAGASA as "very strong, significant typhoons". All of them were strong enough for Signal #4 to be raised for some time as they passed the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Signal #4 was not raised during Typhoon Egay, but its winds were strong enough to meet PAGASA's description of a "super typhoon".

In any case, these typhoons have also been described in media reports as "super typhoons" to emphasize that these were very strong typhoons.
 

NOTES:

  • Signal #4 is raised when very strong winds of more than 185 kph is expected in at least 12 hours.
     

  • PAGASA only has three categories to describe the intensity of a tropical cyclone--tropical depression, tropical storm, and typhoon. "Super typhoon" is just a description of a typhoon with maximum winds reaching more than 200 kph.
