BARANGAYS IN ALBAY THAT ARE

ENDANGERED BY LAHAR FLOW
Barangays affected by lahar during Super Typhoon Reming in 2006
are again under threat with the onslaught of Typhoon Mina
Last updated: November 21, 2007

In 2000, PHIVOLCS determined that parts of these towns are prone to lahar flow:
  • Guinobatan
  • Camalig
  • Daraga
  • Legazpi City
  • Sto. Domingo
  • Bacacay
  • Malilipot
  • Tabaco
  • Ligao
In December 2006, lahar flow triggered by Super Typhoon Reming affected the following barangays:
  • in Sto. Domingo – Barangays Buhatan, San Isidro, Basod

  • in Legazpi City – Barangays Padang and Rawis

  • in Daraga – Barangays Banadero, Salvacion, Cullat Busay, Malubago, Binitayan, Tagas, Cagsawa
The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council of Albay has already recommended the evacuation of residents in the following barangays as Typhoon Mina may trigger lahar flow:
  • in Camalig - Barangays Quirangay, Tumpa, Sua, Tinuburan, Cabangan, Upper Salugan, Anoling, Ilaod, Libod, Tagaytay, Ligban, Barangays 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

  • in Malilipot - Barangays Canaway, parts of San Roque

  • in Sto. Domingo - Barangays San Isidro, Lidong, Fidel Surtida, San Antonio

  • in Legazpi City - Barangays Pawa, Mabinit, Bonga, Matanag, Padang, Buyuan, Bogtong, part of Rawis

  • in Daraga - Barangays Kilicao, Malobago, Busay, Binitayan, Cullat, Salvacion, Matnog, Bañadero, Budiao

  • in Guinobatan - Barangays Maipon, San Rafael, Tandarora, Maninila, Muladbucad Grande, Muladbucad Pequeño
FINDINGS:
  • Except for Barangay Tagas in Daraga, all the barangays affected by lahar flow during Reming's onslaught in 2006 may again be affected by lahar flow this year as Typhoon Mina approaches.

  • More barangays are being forewarned of possible lahar flow this time around. Authorities were criticized last year (Reming) for apparently failing to warn some residents that they are in lahar flow-prone areas.

  • All the barangays forewarned of possible lahar flow due to Typhoon Mina are within PHIVOLCS' lahar hazards map (i.e., lahar-prone).

  • According to Albay Gov. Jose Salceda, around 53,403 persons / 10,076 families in the province are areas that may be endangered by lahar flow.
