  • Make sure drinking water is from a safe source.
  • Boil water for three minutes or chlorinate drinking water to make sure it is safe for consumption.

food

  • Food should be properly cooked.
  • Leftovers should be covered and kept away from household pests.

  • Keep yourself dry and warm.

  • Consult a doctor at once if you or any member of your household show signs and symptoms of an illness to prevent the spread of infection, especially if you are in an evacuation area.
  • Common infections or diseases that may spread in an evacuation area include: cough and cold, acute gastroenteritis, skin and eye infections, measles, dengue, leptospirosis, hepatitis A.
  • Do not allow children to wade in floodwaters to avoid diseases such as leptospirosis.
  • Dispose all wastes properly.
  • Maintain personal hygiene, always wash your hands before and after eating and using the toilet.
  • Safety first. Avoid unstable structures and dangling wires.

when a storm approaches

  • Find shelter in a building or car.
  • Telephone lines and metal pipes can conduct electricity. Unplug appliances. Avoid using the telephone or any electrical appliances.
  • Draw blinds and shades over windows. If windows break due to objects blown by the wind, the shades will prevent glass from shattering into your home.

to protect yourself outside

  • Go to a low-lying, open place away from trees, poles, or metal objects. Make sure the place you pick is not subject to flooding.

after the storm passes

  • Stay away from storm-damaged areas.
  • Listen to the radio for information and instructions.
